The Ehrbar Salon Vienna – A Hidden Jewel of Vienna’s Musical History

Located in Vienna’s 4th district, just a short walk from the Naschmarkt, lies one of the city’s most beautiful historic concert venues: the Ehrbar Salon. Visitors attending today’s Amadeus Concerts Vienna not only experience classical music of the highest caliber but also immerse themselves in the magnificent atmosphere of 19th-century musical Vienna.

The Ehrbar Palace was built in 1876–77 for the renowned piano manufacturer Friedrich Ehrbar. At that time, Vienna was already the center of Europe’s musical scene, and the demand for elegant concert venues continued to grow. Ehrbar recognized this development early and commissioned a concert hall within his palace that is still regarded as an architectural masterpiece today.

Particularly fascinating is the historic salon on the first floor of the palace. Even today, it conveys the intimate atmosphere of Viennese salon culture, which shaped social and cultural life throughout the 19th century.

Musicians, artists, and intellectuals gathered here to exchange ideas about art, literature, and music. Unlike the grand opera houses, the focus here was on a personal and intimate connection to music. It is precisely this atmosphere that makes the Ehrbar Hall so unique to this day.

The smaller rooms and salons of the palace were used not only for social gatherings but also for private musical performances, rehearsals, and artistic encounters.

Like many historic buildings in Vienna, the Ehrbar Palace has witnessed turbulent times. During the World Wars, the hall was temporarily repurposed and served as a military hospital, storage facility, and workshop.

After the Second World War, the historic rooms were carefully restored, and the palace’s original splendor was brought back to life.
